Milk Maids

I love this picture of my paternal grandmother milking her Guernsey bovine.

I’m sure the dress, bonnet, and apron she was wearing were made from feed sacks she got at the general store in Germanville, Iowa… a blip on the map where you could buy anything from lamp oil to overalls.

I’ve always liked paintings and pictures depicting milk maids. The idyllic image—an iconic symbol of our once agrarian society. There’s a peacefulness that represents a simpler time.

It also says… a hard life with chores, morning to night.

Funny… you never see Milk Maid Men in any pictures or paintings… not sure what you’d call a male milker anyway?

At least I’ve never seen any!
